Michael K. Lavanga principal

Michael Lavanga serves as an advocate for and adviser to the firm’s clients on energy matters. Mike represents a wide range of clients, from industrial customers such as large steel mills to electric cooperatives.

In representing industrial customers, Mike recognizes the vital role energy plays in helping to ensure that manufacturers can compete effectively in highly competitive, global markets.  Mike’s work for steel mills and other major energy consumers is focused on securing reliable and predictable power supply at the lowest possible cost.  He is frequently called upon to negotiate electric rates with utilities and energy companies, and regularly litigates energy-related cases before state commissions on behalf of the firm’s clients.

Another significant aspect of Mike’s practice is the representation of electric cooperatives.  In this role, Mike regularly participates in proceedings before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) on behalf of the firm’s clients.  He also works with clients on issues arising in regional transmission organization stakeholder processes, including issues related to transmission cost allocation and wholesale market design.

Mike’s litigation experience includes rate cases, fuel cases, and cases addressing utility renewable energy and energy efficiency portfolios.  Mike has also advocated on behalf of the firm’s clients in policy and rulemaking proceedings before state commissions and FERC, and has participated in the process of drafting energy legislation.

Over his years in practice, Mike has built a detailed knowledge of the electric utility industry and has developed broad and deep relationships in the industry.  This knowledge and network of relationships, together with his familiarity with his clients’ unique qualities and needs, allows him to advocate effectively on behalf of the firm’s clients.
